Description

"Oh, hi again. I didn't think you'd want another cinemagraph made. Or that they'd let you have more than one."
"Cinema- who are you? How did you get here!?"
"Wait, what year is it? Oh! Oh... Well, this is... awkward."
"Have we met?"
"Not... really. At least you didn't meet me yet. You know what? I really should be going..."
"Stop. And explain. Who are you?"
"Oh, I'm no one special... I, uh... just make these moving pictures of nice moments in ponies' lives. You know. To hang on a wall or something."
"Moving pictures? Like cinema?"
"Yes, exactly! Only without a camera, or a projector. Or any of that. So really, not much like cinema at all. Uh... are you okay?"
"Think of the possibilities..."
"Look, I know what you're thinking - and I don't do propaganda. They're just memorabilia. Something to remind you of a great time in your life."
"That's perfect. I have just the right moment in mind. I want to hire you."
"This doesn't sound like -"
"I insist."
"I - Oh. Hello. Didn't see you there. Careful where you point that thing, somepony might get hurt."
"So... Let's talk about these moving pictures of yours."

Commissioned by SilasShield-Wing, featuring, among others, his OC. And in case I have to spell it out, I'm not a nazi, or a nazi sympathizer.

Technical

Still image created with inkscape.
The animations were made and exported with aniGen

This was a really intense test of scale of SVG animation for me.

A lot of <use> tags (or "clones" as inkscape calls them) in the works. Uniform is linked with <use> to each individual soldier model, who, in turn, are <use>d in the walking rows. Finally, the same rows are actually linked three times as three separate display groups (one for every thirty seconds of animation) to create the infinite crowd with consistent layering. All of this to save up on code, and the SVG is still almost 12 MB (!) in size, without any raster images involved.

With all the soldiers in, even my decently powerful PC has real trouble even editing the file in inkscape. In aniGen, each frame renders for about 15 seconds, too. So yeah, kinda pushing the limits.

Crowd is composed of thirty individual soldiers (1/1 male/female), with as much asset and color diversity as I could afford. A third of the whole crowd is actually made of their duplicates. Speaking of which, just the soldiers alone eat up more than two thirds of the GIF color palette. Complete animation loop clocks at thirty seconds (in original SVG) of motion across most of the screen, making my standard 30 fps GIF almost 100 MB. Since that's more than dA (understandably) allows, I actually exported this at 20 fps and pushed it up to 25. It's still almost 80 MB in size.

When I started making this, I definitely did nazi this getting so crazy.

As always, I appreciate any comments, criticism and discussion.
What's your best nazi pony pun? I'm curious.
